The success of Readymade - a workshop on found objects in 2014 - prompted curator Nityananda Ojha and Jagannath Panda to explore the relationship of art and product design more fully. The sequel to Readymade was thus conceived. This was deliberately designed with a more fulsome mandate and time to allow artists to explore the concept of product design at their own pace and produce more finished and quality products.

 

The workshop kicked off with 2 successive meetings at Utsha Foundation premises where a group of selected artists were treated to a host of concepts, pictures and videos on product design by the curator. This included the process of design, sources of inspiration, design as perceived from a cultural lens , the importance of materials being used to execute the concept and last but not the least the principles of good design. A brainstorming session followed where artists clarified questions on what theme they should attempt their design on and what materials to use. The artists agreed to meet again with initial product ideas which they will discuss with curator Ojha. 

 

The workshop will span the next three months with periodic gatherings organised by the curator to review work or to provide talks to the participating artists including interactions with experienced designers. The final products will be reviewed by the curator and Jagannath Panda after which a public exhibition of curated products will be held. The products will then also be available for purchase on the Utsha website.
