Utsha Residency

Utsha is a space where creative minds devoted to diverse disciplines can create, interact and reflect upon any area of their choice. Exchange of techniques, experiences, and skills across the countries under the ambit of a facilitated residency is always useful in understanding the  diversities in culture. Our residency programme is customised to support the specific needs of artists working in all media and disciplines, from around the world.

Started in 2012, Utsha has hosted residencies for over 40  artists, poets, scholars and writers from Odisha , India and abroad.

It hosts residencies under 3 models :

A. Duration: 1 week to 12 weeks

(Individual applicants must apply for 4 weeks minimum stay. Any deviations    will be considered by the Utsha panel on a case by case basis.)

B. No of Residents at one time: 2persons (max)

C. Funding: The applicants have to arrange their own funds for the Residency and can apply to various funding agencies. Utsha can give you a letter of affiliation in case you want to apply for a grant. This is subject to approval of your proposal of work at Utsha by our experts.

The selection process ranges from an open call application and panel process to nominations or by invitation depending on the project, the type of residency and the partnering organisation. Applications are always reviewed by a panel of Utsha affiliates.

A. Application Process:

The residency takes place round the year and artists can apply for a minimum of 1 week and upto 12 weeks residency at Utsha. Artists and scholars of all disciplines are welcome to apply for a direct residency at Utsha. Applications can be submitted round the year. The selection of the artists for the residency is based on their application form and the documents submitted.

If you are applying for a collaborative project along with another artist/writer and are willing to share, you may apply for a shared accommodation.

B. Materials to be submitted with the application:(Please put this in a form format besides standard name , address , telephone and email details. On submit a thank you mail should go to the applicant and a mail should come to utshafoundation@gmail.com for review)

  • Digitally scanned passport size photograph
  • Description of the Project
  • A Letter of Application
  • Curriculum Vitae – including significant achievements or awards.
  • Visual Artist: 10 slides, photographs, CD-Rom or Video of recent work.
  • Writer/Scholar: Short Story, Poems or Chapters, Research Paper.
  • Any other area: Any supportive document describing your work.

Please Note:

All Non Indian residents (except residents from Nepal and Bhutan) must hold a valid Visa and Passport for the duration of their visit/stay. You are required to send a scanned copy of your visa and passport prior to your arrival.

C. Cancellation:

In case of last moment cancellations (3 months or later before commence date), 25% of any advance deposit shall be forfeited at any given time.

A. Accommodation:

During your stay at Utsha you will be housed in the residency room, giving you full access to a dedicated studio space at all times, catering for whatever work regime you set for yourself.

We have a single room accommodation equipped with 2 single beds with an attached bathroom. Clean linen and towels are included. We have a 300 square foot studio along with supplies for resident artists. There is an additional 4000 square ft of outdoor space available for use. Wi-Fi and laundry facilities are available on campus.

B. Medical Care:

A First Aid kit is available in the office. In case of an emergency, you can request for medical help to be summoned. Residents must pay for their own medical bills.Residents will be responsible for obtaining their own health / medical, accident or other insurance that may be necessary.

C. Dining:

You will also have access to an equipped kitchen to cook food. Should you require the services of a cook during your residency Utsha will be happy to arrange that for you for a modest fee.

D. Interactive gallery spaces:

Utsha studio space doubles up as a gallery and the spacious grounds are available for any installations or site specific artwork.

E. Library/Research Centre:

Utsha has a highly specialised reference library housing around 1000 books on art, culture, museums, Indian traditions of textiles, handicrafts etc. Visitors, researchers, artists and students are welcome to use the material.

F. Transport:
Local buses provide direct linkswithin the city.

G. Taxi:

If required, residents may arrange for transport to any place within the city. Taxi hailing apps like Uber and Ola are quite easily available.Airport pick-up can be arranged on prior notice and will be charged on actual.

A. Pre-residency Support:

Before your arrival, we:
1. Reach out to the individuals and organisations in our network whose interests best align with your project;
2. Make arrangements for studio visits and other activities that will maximise your exposure while at Utsha;
3. Get your accommodation and studio space ready;
4. Mobilise the research, technical and other resources you will need during your time in residency.

B. Production support:

Our staff is dedicated to the successful development of your work and implementation of your project, and we are always available to provide assistance.

Together, we have expertise spanning many areas:
1. Technology: Basic digital media and electronic equipment;
2. Logistics: sourcing materials, installation and de-installation, transportation, and access to other resources as required by your project;
3. Research: locating resources, obtaining access to local libraries, museums and archives.

D. A Multifunctional Work, Meeting and Presentation Space:

The Utsha Foundation space operates simultaneously as a work, meeting and presentation space. This helps the artists in the following :
1. Non-studio-based artistic and curatorial projects (*);
2. Discussions, workshops, studio visits and informal gatherings;
3. Public presentations with screenings, talks, performances and short-term exhibitions.

E. Exposure:

During your residency, you will build lasting connections within our network of curators, gallerists, critics, artists and scholars. In addition, you will be part of our programming. Each month we program public events featuring exhibitions, discussions and screenings with new work and findings by our artists. These activities are held at our space or at partnering venues.
